Ardmore’s Jacob Morales – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by RibCrib

For Jacob Morales, an Ardmore High School senior tennis player, effort is everything.

“Always give it your all, whether you’re winning or losing, so you don’t have any regrets knowing you did everything you could,” said Morales — that’s advice he received from his uncle Randy, who sparked his love for tennis.

“I started playing sophomore year, so for 3 years,” Morales said. “My uncle is the reason I got into tennis. He’d take me to the courts to hit and coach me, and my cousins played and were good, so I was inspired to keep the tradition running when I returned to Ardmore.”

Morales went to nearby Plainview High School his freshman year. He focuses fully on tennis now but also works with the football team during his sixth period. He frequently hits the weight room to maintain peak shape for optimal performance.

“It’s helped me a lot in my stamina and endurance,” Morales said. “When most people are fatigued and tired, I’m still playing like we just started, and it’s helped add some power on my shots.”

Power’s a big part of Morales’ play.

“I would say I have great forehand and monster serve,” Morales said. “I also have a good sense of knowledge for the game and try to help better my teammates around, whether it’s giving advice or just being supportive.”

Though it’s an individual sport at the singles level, Morales strives to be an excellent supporter of his fellow Tigers.

“I think it’s important to be a great teammate, because you neer know who you might inspire to push themselves to be better and seeing the success of my teammates feels just as good as my success,” Morales said.

His coaches have also instilled some of these values within Morales.

“I’d like to show my appreciation to coach Becky and coach Roberts for always supporting and believing in me and helping me get through tough times,” Morales said.

But above all, Morales centers his life with his devotion to God.

“I’m a Christian athlete that enjoys going to church and FCA when I’m not practicing on the courts,” Morales said. “I believe that He guides me through my life and He’s the reason I’m able to wake up in the morning and play the sport that I love.”
