OFFENSE
The Bulldogs have a veteran cast with nine starters returning on offense for second year head coach Corey Cole. They are loaded at the skill positions with well more than 3,000 total yards of production back in the fold. Elusive halfback Maddax “Maddog” Mobly (5-9, 170, Sr.) makes the offense hum. Mobly rushed for 849 yards and eight touchdowns and hauled in 391 yards receiving and another four touchdowns. He even threw a halfback pass for a score. Austin Garrett (6-0, 185, Sr.) ran for 774 yards at the other running back position. Quarterback Colten Cole (6-3, 220, Jr.) is the final piece of the puzzle, throwing for 2,009 yards and 25 touchdowns as a sophomore. Brian Davenport (6-0, 150, Jr.), Bridge Barrett (6-0, 150, Jr.) and Eli Vinson (6-0, 180, Sr.) are the top targets at receiver. Davenport caught 12 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns in 2023 and Vinson moved in from Madill where he started for three years and won a state championship in the pole vault. The Bulldogs offensive line is built around a trio of formidable starters who all have collegiate offers. Caden Cole (6-4, 280, Sr.) is the son of head coach Corey Cole. He will be the left tackle. Cole is the runner-up state champion powerlifter in the large class with an incredible 1,500-pound total, featuring a 600-pound squat and 375-pound bench. Justus Gilliam (6-1, 260, Sr.) is at left guard. He’s the defending heavyweight state champion in wrestling and utilizes great leverage as a blocker. Gideon Peterson (6-5, 265, Sr.) completes the powerful trio at right tackle. Brody Wallace (5-10, 240, Jr.) and Nash Williamson (5-11, 225, Sr.) round out the offensive line at center and right guard.
DEFENSE
The defense is even more experienced than the offense. Garrett is the top returning tackler at middle linebacker. Garrett posted 125 stops, four tackles for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He’s always around the football. The same trio of Gilliam, Cole and Peterson make up three of the front four on the Bulldogs defense. Baer Webb (5-11, 185) is the fourth member of the group at defensive end. Gilliam led the way with 82 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and five sacks at defensive tackle. The other three combined for 17 tackles for loss and eight sacks. It may be the best interior unit in Class 3A. Cash Matlack (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Mobly made 142 tackles at outside linebacker. The secondary is headlined by Maddux Boyd at strong safety. He’s earning some Division-I interest with his hard-hitting abilities. Eli Vinson will step in at free safety with Briar Davenport (5-9, 170, Jr.) and Bridge Barrett (6-0, 150, Jr.) at corner. Jett Runyan has great potential and is too good to keep off the field. The Bulldogs are the favorite to win their district and could make noise beyond that level. It should be a fun season at Sulphur.
