For Estrella Mendoza, soccer isn’t just a sport—it’s a way to grow and contribute to her team. A junior at Ardmore High School, Estrella plays as a defensive midfielder and takes pride in her role on the field.
“My parents put me in soccer when I was little, along with other sports like softball,” she said. “But soccer stuck with me, and I’ve loved playing ever since.”
Estrella has been part of her high school’s soccer program since her first year, and she’s embraced the challenges and rewards of competing at this level. She credits her coach, Alyssa Emery, for being a positive influence.
“I really look up to Coach Emery,” Estrella said. “She believes in Jesus, has great energy, and is always positive. It takes a lot to bring her down, and I admire that.”
Estrella takes her preparation for soccer seriously, often studying opposing teams through video analysis to anticipate their strategies. “Sometimes we meet with our coach to analyze games, and it helps me understand how to perform better,” she said.
While the team faces challenges this season, particularly with a large group of freshmen and losing key seniors, Estrella remains optimistic. Her personal goals include improving her communication, speed and maintaining a positive attitude in the field.
“If I don’t perform well, it can affect the whole team,” she said. “It’s really important for everyone to do their part.”
Outside of soccer, Estrella works part-time and enjoys painting and drawing to relax and relieve stress. Although she doesn’t plan to play soccer in college, she has clear aspirations for the future.
“After high school, I’d like to study esthetics and work in beauty services like facials and skincare,” she said.
With her commitment to her team and drive to succeed, Estrella Mendoza is excited to make the most of her high school soccer season and pursue her dreams beyond the field.
