Plainview Coach – Steve Ross – Presented by Ryan Hobbs Investment Services

The Plainview boys golf team is looking to three-peat this season after winning the last two state championships. Head coach Steve Ross knows that he has a solid team again this season and he knows that they are up for the challenge.

“Our goal this season is to win,” Ross said. “These guys want three in a row and I am returning four of the five and we will actually be better with a very talented freshman Boston Neher. Playing the state tournament on our home course will be added pressure.”

Jace Chaney and Hudson Hobbs will be the leaders on the team this season and they are ready to go. But Ross knows that it is a team effort.

“Those two will do what they need to do,” he said. “It is the three, four, and five bags that win it for you. If you can get those guys to post low numbers, you will have a great chance to win. We will be looking to Carter Fernando, Caden Pyles, and Boston Neher to take care of business.”

In order to complete the three-peat, Ross knows that his guys will face some tough opponents, possibly the toughest in the state.
“I believe the best teams in the state are in Class 4A,” coach Ross said. “Go look at the teams that are there and tell me how this is not the best class in the state for golf. I love our chances but it will be very difficult.”

Throughout his coaching career, Ross has seen a lot and he knows that the game of golf can be fickle at times. But he knows he has a good group and he is looking forward to the season. And no matter what happens, he is going to be proud of his team.
“I have been a part of a few championship teams in my 31 years of coaching and none of them are ever easy,” he said. “I just hope we play our best at the right time, if that is not good enough you just shake the hand of who beat you and congratulate them.”
