Ardmore High School sophomore Da’Rai Washington is quickly building a reputation as a disciplined and driven varsity athlete, fueled by family inspiration and a commitment to improvement.
Washington, who will enter the 10th grade this fall, said his passion for football began by watching his cousin, Javon. “When I was watching him play, I just wanted to be like him,” Washington said.
A middle linebacker, Washington embraces the mental and physical demands of his position. He said one of the biggest challenges is reading the offensive line and reacting quickly. “The hard part about that is to watch the linemen and knowing what to do,” he said.
Despite the difficulty, Washington thrives on preparation. In his free time, he studies film and works out to sharpen his skills. His dedication extends beyond the field, where he enjoys math and cites Ryan Martin as his favorite teacher.
Team culture plays a major role in Washington’s experience. He values the connection and accountability within the program. “I enjoy most about being a member of the team is the chemistry we have with each other and the discipline we have,” he said. “I love mostly about my team and my teammates is how they push me through practice.”
Washington has already created standout moments on the field. He recalled a memorable play when a teammate, Marcus Ford, returned an interception for a touchdown. His own highlight came on a 97-yard rushing touchdown. “My favorite memory of a game was when I scored a 97 rushing touchdown,” he said.
Before each game, Washington centers himself with prayer and music, a routine that helps him stay focused.
Through athletics, Washington said he has learned lessons that extend beyond football. “Athletics taught me that I may use later in life is to never give up when times get hard,” he said.
With strong motivation and a team-first mindset, Washington continues to grow as both a player and student.
