Ardmore High School’s Clay Newby is quickly establishing himself as a promising young athlete, driven by discipline, strong mentorship and a team-first mindset.
Newby, who will be a sophomore this fall, credits much of his motivation to his father, Josh Newby. “He has taught me how to be the best that I can be and push through anything,” Newby said. That foundation has shaped both his athletic approach and his outlook off the field.
On the field, Newby plays free safety, a position that demands awareness and adaptability. He said the most challenging part is mastering new defensive coverages, but he leans on teammates Tyson Laster, Jamane Stubblefield, Marcus Addison and Kaziah Andrews for support. “They’ve helped me understand everything better and build confidence,” he said.
Newby said the team’s accountability sets it apart. “We hold each other accountable and correct each other’s mistakes,” he said, adding that the positive locker room energy is what he enjoys most about being part of the program.
One of his favorite memories came during Ardmore’s 2025 playoff victory against Elk City, a moment he described as unforgettable. He has also witnessed his share of excitement on the field, including a tipped pass in eighth grade that resulted in a touchdown catch.
Off the field, Newby enjoys spending time outdoors, often fishing or hunting. In the classroom, biology stands out as his favorite subject, and he credits Coach Coley as his favorite teacher.
Newby said athletics have taught him perseverance, a lesson reinforced by offensive coordinator Coach Custar, who also serves as his wrestling coach and youth pastor. “No matter how difficult something is, you have to keep going and get through it,” Newby said.
Before games, Newby prepares mentally by listening to music and focusing on his responsibilities, ensuring he is ready to contribute when his number is called.
