Ardmore High School senior Geno Odom has developed into more than just a key contributor on the varsity football team, he has grown into a disciplined leader shaped by strong influences on and off the field.
Odom, a 12th grader, plays outside linebacker, a position that demands quick thinking and sharp instincts. He said one of the toughest parts of his role is “making my read keys,” a responsibility that requires him to react quickly and accurately to opposing offenses.
While the physical side of football is demanding, Odom credits his growth to the mentorship around him. “Coach Dobey inspires me the most,” Odom said. “He helps me not just be a better football player, but also a better person as I enter the world as a young man.”
That emphasis on character carries into the team culture. Odom said the bond within the program is one of its greatest strengths. “I love that we are a close-knit group and everybody gets along with each other,” he said.
Some of Odom’s favorite memories reflect both the excitement and unpredictability of the sport. He recalled his first varsity tackle as a sophomore against Altus as a defining moment. He also pointed to one of the most unusual plays he has witnessed. “The craziest thing I’ve seen on the field was when Jajuan Lee caught the ball off the opponent’s back,” he said.
Off the field, Odom values time with friends and staying active. He enjoys playing pickleball at Regional Park and spending time with teammates outside of football. “What I enjoy most is being around my friends and having a good time,” he said.
Preparation is also key to his routine. Before games, Odom keeps things simple. “I normally listen to music or take a nap before the game,” he said.
Odom said former teammate Javon Singleton left a lasting impact on him. “He was overall just a great teammate and a positive role model. He kept me fired up before the games,” Odom said.
In the classroom, Odom favors math and credits Coach Roberts as his favorite teacher. Outside of school, he works as a lifeguard at the Ardmore City Waterpark.
As he looks ahead, Odom said the lessons learned through football will stay with him. “You have to have discipline to overcome obstacles and challenges in your life,” he said.
