Sulphur High School running back Jojo Gray enters his senior season with a clear sense of purpose, grounded in faith, family and the lessons he has learned on the field.
“God and my mother inspire me to become a better man,” Gray said.
Gray, who will be a senior this fall, said English has been his favorite subject, pointing to Mrs. Watson, his sophomore-year teacher, as someone who made a lasting impact on him in the classroom.
On the field, Gray wears No. 10 and lines up at running back, a position he says demands both patience and quick decision-making. “The hardest thing about my position is finding an open hole,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Gray embraces the physical and mental grind of the game. One moment that stands out came during a playoff matchup against Anadarko, when he broke free for an 86-yard run — the longest of his career.
“That’s my favorite memory,” he said.
Not every memory has been as celebratory. Gray recalled a dramatic moment in the 2026 state game when Lincoln Christian connected on a 40-yard Hail Mary before halftime to take the lead. Experiences like that, he said, have shaped his mindset.
“Athletics has taught me that I can’t give up easy and to always be above the standard,” Gray said.
For Gray, football is about more than individual performance. He values the bond he shares with his teammates, describing their chemistry as a defining strength heading into the 2026 season.
“Playing the sport I love and making a bond with my brothers,” he said. “Everyone knows each other, and our chemistry is like no other.”
Away from football, Gray keeps things simple. He spends his free time working and watching Overtime videos on YouTube, staying connected to the sport he loves.
His pregame routine reflects the same balance of focus and faith that defines his approach overall. Gray stretches, listens to music and takes time to pray.
“I pray to God about relieving stress on me,” he said.
As he prepares for his final high school season, Gray remains focused on growth both as a player and as a person. With strong influences guiding him and a deep connection to his team, he aims to make the most of every opportunity on and off the field.
