Jamane Stubblefield, a junior defensive back on the Ardmore High School varsity football team, said his journey in the program has been defined by resilience, growth and a relentless team-first mentality.
Stubblefield credits his mother as his greatest inspiration. “My mom inspires me because she’s been doing [it] by herself since my first birthday, even through the struggles and hard times. She stuck it out and always found a solution,” he said.
On the field, Stubblefield plays defensive back, a position he said requires constant focus and discipline. “The hardest thing about playing DB is guarding someone,” he said. Despite the challenges, he said he loves the work ethic and passion his teammates bring every day.
“What I love most about my teammates [is] their love for the game and them coming in ready to work every day.”
Stubblefield’s favorite memory came during last season’s playoff run, when the team won its first playoff game in years against Elk City. That victory capped a turnaround from a 1-9 season during his freshman year to a second-round playoff appearance last season.
“What I enjoy most about being a member of this team is what we had to come back from,” Stubblefield said. “The seniors that are seniors this year, they went 1-9, and my freshman year we went 6-5. Then last year we went all the way to the second round, and I feel this year is our year. We take it all the way. That’s what I love about being a part of this team, our comeback and will to keep going and push every season.”
Off the field, Stubblefield said he enjoys math class with teacher Mr. McGinnis, and in his free time, he likes “eating and being with my friends.” Before games, he has a simple pregame routine: “TikTok. I watch TikTok for an hour straight.”
Stubblefield said football has taught him lessons that extend beyond the gridiron. “Athletics have taught me to never give up and keep pushing, that it’s gonna get better,” he said.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Stubblefield remains confident in its potential. Having witnessed dramatic improvement over the past three years, he believes this year’s squad is poised to build on that momentum and make a deep postseason run.
