Ardmore’s Andrew Rather – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Owens Insurance Agency

The final stretch of the 800-meter race is where Andrew Rather thrives. In a recent meet, the Ardmore High School senior surged past three competitors in the last 200 meters, securing second place and coming within seconds of victory.

Moments like these define Rather’s commitment to pushing himself harder every time he steps on the track.

Rather’s running career began in middle school, where he participated in multiple sports. But once he reached high school, he decided to focus fully on cross country and track, recognizing his potential in distance events.

He competes in both the 800 meters and the mile during track season, while also running cross country in the fall.

This year marks a turning point for Rather. “This is really the first year I’ve locked in,” he said. “I’ve always been running, but this year I’ve really focused.”

That focus includes logging 40 to 50 miles a week, balancing morning runs with afternoon workouts.

Recovery is just as important as the miles. “I get lots of sleep, stretch every day, and use a foam roller and massage gun,” Rather said.

His goal this season is clear—qualify for the state meet and drop significant time in both events. While he has not yet reached state, he is determined to change that in his senior year.

Off the track, Rather balances his rigorous training with academics.

As a high school senior, he is also enrolled in college courses, giving him the opportunity to get ahead academically. He attends his college classes in the morning before heading to practice in the afternoon.

Rather draws inspiration from his family, particularly his mother. “She shows me every day what it means to push yourself,” he said. Her support, along with encouragement from teammates, fuels his drive to succeed.

After graduation, Rather plans to attend college and is considering whether to continue running at the next level.
