LONE GROVE LONGHORNS
Coach: CURTIS COLE
6-5
Lone Grove comes into 2026 off a 6-5 season under head coach Curtis Cole, who has spent five years as head coach and 14 years total in the program. Cole says the Longhorns “bring back some veteran mixed in with some young guys that got to gain some experience as the season went on,” and adds that they “have high hopes for these guys and look to have a great season.” With that blend of experience and emerging talent, Lone Grove expects to be in the mix again this fall.
Offensively, the Longhorns return six starters and will line up primarily in 21 personnel, “try[ing] to spread the field while maintaining our inside counter run game.” Senior receiver Aybel Shorter is a headliner after catching 16 passes for 407 yards and three touchdowns, while fellow senior wideout Mattox Idelman added 17 receptions for 210 yards and two scores, giving Lone Grove two proven perimeter threats. Junior running back Kaine Roberts brings balance on the ground with 152 carries for 677 yards and five touchdowns plus 10 receptions for 95 yards, and junior receiver Scout Quinn chipped in seven catches for 104 yards as an emerging option. The offensive line is anchored by seniors Asher Conway and Justin Bradshaw, giving the run game and protection a veteran foundation.
Defensively, Lone Grove brings back five starters and will operate from a 3-4 odd front. Quinn doubles as a standout defensive back, recording 28 tackles and eight interceptions, while Shorter added 51 tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions in the secondary. Senior defensive back Braxton Armstrong contributed 18 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions, and linebackers Dayton James and Chase Warden combined for strong production, with James posting 30 tackles and three tackles for loss and Warden joining junior lineman Rylen Floyd (12 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack) to solidify the front seven. Shorter is Lone Grove’s VYPE Top 100 nominee, and Cole describes him as “a great and diverse player” the staff can “play…at many different spots” who “always finds a way to get the job done.” Sophomore Zane Hale is described as “a young talented player” the Longhorns “have high hopes for this season as a breakout player to watch.”
