Lone Grove’s Tatum Quinn – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Bone & Joint Clinic of Southern Oklahoma

Senior shortstop Tatum Quinn has grown up in the middle of the diamond, and this spring he is determined to help Lone Grove High School baseball make the most of his final season. Whether he is directing traffic before a pitch or digging in at the plate, Quinn embraces the responsibility that comes with being the leader of the
infield.

Quinn anchors Lone Grove at shortstop, a position he describes as demanding both physically and mentally. He said the most difficult part is “being the leader on the field communicating different situations and possible plays,” a challenge he welcomes as a senior. Those expectations have sharpened his voice and his decision making, turning him into a player teammates look to when the game speeds up.

That presence is rooted in lessons he said athletics has taught him along the way — work ethic, leadership and teamwork skills he plans to carry well beyond high school.

On a competitive Lone Grove roster, he believes those traits show up most in how the Longhorns respond to adversity.

“The competitiveness we bring to the game,” Quinn said, is what he loves most about his teammates. “We work together and fight until the end of the game.”

Quinn models parts of his game after Chicago Cubs star Javier Báez, a player he said inspires him because “he makes things happen.” From instinctive reads off the bat to aggressive baserunning, Smith studies how impactful a shortstop can be on every pitch. At the plate, he said his favorite pitch to hit is a changeup, a offering that rewards his ability to stay back and drive the ball when pitchers try to disrupt his timing.

In the classroom, Quinn lists history as his favorite subject and points to Mr. Mowdy as his favorite teacher.

Away from school and baseball, he spends much of his free time outdoors, especially hunting ducks and fishing when the schedule allows. Those quiet mornings and long days on the water give him a different pace than the daily grind of practices and games.

Around the team, Smith said senior teammate Jackson Painter is both the most vocal player and the one who keeps everyone laughing. That balance of serious talk and loose energy mirrors the way Quinn approaches the season: locked in when it is time to compete, grateful for the camaraderie that comes with high school baseball.

As his Lone Grove career winds down, the senior shortstop wants to be remembered as a leader who helped his team compete to the final out.
