Plainview High School sophomore Shyia Douglas brings energy, commitment and a willingness to step into whatever role her team needs. Primarily a back spot, Douglas can also serve as a base when called upon, providing versatility and support for her teammates.
For Douglas, cheerleading offers more than an opportunity to represent her school. It is also a place where she can express herself.
“I enjoy being able to support my school from a closer perspective and leading the crowds. My favorite part is performing, though. I get to show a part of myself that people may not witness on a daily. I can be myself.”
That confidence comes from a summer of steady work. Douglas and her teammates practiced three or four times each week, with only dead week away from the gym.
“This year we practiced 3-4 times a week over the summer. The only week we had off was dead week. It was definitely draining at times, but in the end, worth it.”
Douglas credits her parents as the people who most inspire her. Their example has helped shape the way she approaches athletics, school and life.
“The people that inspire me most are my parents. They have shown me what hard work and dedication can accomplish. I’ve never seen them have a day off just because they wanted too, and that makes me work and push myself harder. Watching them work hard, make sacrifices, and put my brothers and I first has shaped me into the person I am.”
Through athletics, Douglas has learned lessons she plans to carry well beyond high school.
“Athletics has taught me to stay disciplined, resilient, and motivated. I have learned that you don’t just get what you want handed to you. You have to work for it. I will definitely apply those three key things to my future.”
Douglas also values the example set by upperclassmen and teammates. She looks up to Mazzy Black for her leadership and dependability, while Arianna Nowell has made a lasting impact through her positivity and focus.
Away from cheer, Douglas enjoys reading, listening to music and shopping. English is her favorite subject, and she remembers fourth grade teacher Mrs. Doughty as her favorite educator. When she is spending time in town, Cafe Alley is her favorite place for its food and atmosphere.
