DAVIS WOLVES
Coach: GREG PARKER
9-3
OFFENSE
The Wolves haven’t made the semifinals since 2017 and haven’t claimed a gold ball since 2014. In most places, that’s square in the rear-view mirror, but Davis isn’t most places. The Wolves have two playoff wins in the last five years, including a 44-30 conquest of Lindsay last year and an admirable effort against Jones in a 30-26 2nd round loss. Davis will be a part of Class 2A-Division II and will be mentioned right at the top in preseason expectations. Head coach Greg Parker has seven starters returning on offense with experience at all levels. Fisher Smith (5-10, 195, Sr.) and Jacob McClellan (6-0, 265, Sr.) begin their third season as starters on the offensive line. McClellan lines up at tackle with Smith at guard and Luke Johnson (6-2, 205, Sr.) at center. The trio is well-versed in how to block for the flexbone backfield. Brenden Rawls (5-8, 190, Sr.) is the primary ball carrier. He’s the prototype for the physical rushing style long employed by Davis. Rawls rushed for 1,203 yards and 17 touchdowns while holding down the fort at linebacker as well. Trey Melton (5-10, 180, Sr.) has big play ability at halfback. Melton is especially dangerous in play action and is also a threat returning kicks and punts. Dee Idelman (6-0, 200, Sr.) is tough to stop in short yardage situations and does a great job blocking. Dax Owens (5-9, 170, So.) picked up six games of starting experience at quarterback in 2023. He has the speed to get to the corner and a supporting cast perfect for a young quarterback. Owens combined for 1,000 yards of offense and ten touchdowns. Wyatt Fielding (6-5, 230, Sr.) and Landon Gibson are penciled in at tight end with Jett Jennings and Logan Gibson expected to step into spots on the offensive line.
DEFENSE
The secondary is the most experienced area on defense, where the Wolves should boast one of the better units in Class 2A. Dakota Carter (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Trey Melton are the top returning tacklers in the secondary and will start for the third consecutive year. Dalton Hefley, Braxdyn Griffin, Dax Owens and Gage Copenbarger all saw plenty of playing time a year ago. The Wolves are especially deep at corner. Inside linebacker is another certified area of strength. Rance Digby (5-9, 185, Sr.) calls the defense alongside Brenden Rawls, forming an excellent duo at the position. Luke Johnson (6-2, 205), Dee Idelman and Brendyn Pierce also return at linebacker. Davis has a good group of candidates to replace some spots hit by graduation on the defensive line. All of the starters on the offensive line as well as Rylan Gomez could see time in a rotation on the other side of the football. Wyatt Fielding will wreak havoc from the defensive end position. The non-district schedule is full of the usual tough customers. It will provide the seasoning needed for the Wolves to bring home the school’s 7th state championship.
